Lesotho Ideal fishing spot

...as Lesotho "Trout" Fishing is the best in Africa

The Mountain streams of the Lesotho highlands offer some of the best trout fishing in Africa. Rainbow trout were introduced to the streams in 1932. The fingerlings were carried on pack mules and released into the streams where they prospered in the unpolluted water that is rich in natural foods. Yellow fish and barbel are found in the lowland rivers. The high altitude and cold temperatures lend themselves well to year round trout fishing in Lesotho.

Trying to fish in the rainy season is possibly the worst time as most of the rivers are clouded with silt and the fishing is badly affected. There are some of the rivers that are good for fishing then, but they are not readily accessible.

Fishing Regulations in Lesotho

O The license fee is minimal only M5.00 and the licenses can be obtained from: The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Division in Maseru.

O The season for trout fishing is closed between 1st June and 31st August every year.

O Fishing tackle that you may use for trout is only a rod and line and artificial non-spinning flies that may be used. Landing net and a gaff are not permitted.

O The bag limit for trout is twelve trout over 10 inches in length. All the other trout must be returned to the water.

For the fisherman Lesotho can offer so much. There are migrating yellow fish that leap up waterfalls that is up to 2 metres in height to reach their spawning grounds, while you can find barbel in the lowland rivers. Many of Lesothos Rivers and dams are packed with trout, and the most accessible sites are:

Butha-Buthe

The Malibamats'o is about 2 km below the Oxbow Lodge.

Mokhotlong

De Beers Dam - here you will require an additional permit as this is private waters. This is a really good spot to fish as it has been stocked.

Khubelu River downstream from Metebong ea Lelingoana
Soloane, near the disused mine at Letseng-laTerai Mokhotlong River upstream at Mateanong and Sanqebethu

Qacha's Nek

Sehlabathebe Park - Tsoelikane River downstream from the falls
Sehlabathebe Lodge - the Park Ponds
Leqooa River - can be reached with a 4 hour pony trek from the lodge
Maseru

Makhaleng River - 2 km below Molimo Nthuse Lodge
Senqunyane River upstream from Marakabei Lodge
Thaba- Tseka

Thaba-Tseka main dam, near the Pony Breeding Centre
Semonkong

Here you can experience some wild trout fishing; both rainbow and brown could be found on the Maletsunyane River, the best spots are to be found upstream of Fraser's Semonkong Lodge and at the bottom of the waterfall. It was last stocked in I think: 1976 - there is no guaranteed catch but it is definitely well worth it when you do catch something!
